Reviews of "The Great Gilly Hopkins" by Katherine Paterson

from Bath Middle School, Bath, Michigan, USA (September 2003)

By Mara, 11

Gilly Hopkins is a foster child and is moving to a new foster home. Gilly's mother left her when she was just a baby. Will she see her mother again? Now she has to move to another smelly, old foster home. And she doesn't want to be there. Or does she? Find out by reading this awesome book.
My favorite part of the book is when Gilly teaches W.E. how to fly a paper plane. This is my favorite part because Gilly starts getting to like her foster home. And thats saying something, because she usually hates her foster homes. She usually tries as hard as she can to leave. But now she thinks she's turning too soft.
I would give it 10 out of 10 *'s.

I have recently read the Great Gilly Hopkins, which turned out to be very great for its size( about a little less then 200 pages). The book is about an 11 year old foster child who has given up on trying to learn to love her families. She had moved about 8 times in her life, just because her families didn't love her. Gilly longs to live with her own mother, to be loved. Then she has a plan, a plan to live with her mother, and to never move again her life.
I like the part where Gilly finds out she really can have a family that loves her, she just had to find the right one.
This book should get 4 out of 5 stars.
I'd have to recomend this book to 5,6,and 7 graders.
Read this book to find out where she ends up!

The book is about a 11 year old girl, that is a foster child. Gilly, short for Galadriel, has just moved in with her new foster parent, Trotter, and her foster brother, William Ernest, W.E. for short. She thinks that the house is a dump, and she wants to get as far away as she possibly can. Worst of all Gilly has to eat dinner with a blind, black man, which she has never done before (and dosen't really want to). Gilly Hopkins is concluded to be no-one's child and she is a foster child that no one cares about. She gets mad because she has to move away from her mom. She was going to a new school. She had a friend named Agnes strokes. Gilly is a girl that says swearwords like hell, dammit. She once said to Trotter that she was the meanest person she knew. Gilly had a couple people that she knows, she know Mr. Randolph, Trotter, W.E, Miss. Harris, MISS Ellis, she knows mrs. Liz and she knows who her nonnie is. The funniest chapter in this book is harrassing Miss Harris. In this chapter at the beginning of class before anybody gets there Gilly puts a note on Miss Harris' desk and harrasses her. Gilly thought as she sat there for 2 hours waiting for Miss Harris to take her grade book and grade papers. She finally at the last hour picked up a stack of papers and started grading skids paper finally she seen the paper that Gilly had written and she asked Gilly to stay after class and tell her why she wrote the letter. I think that Gilly should learn to not be mean all the time she shouldn't swear all the time either
I would give the book 2 thumbs up for being good at not swearing.

The author is Katherine Paterson. Gilly is a orphan who moves in with a lady named Maime Trotter. She didn't like it there. She thought it was a dump. She had a mental son, a blind neighbor who Trotter thought was part of the family and a fat lady who thought Gilly would love her. She missed her mom so much, she moved in with her grandma. Courtney (her mom) came and visited with Gilly and her grandma. At the end she figures out her grandma paid her mom to come to make Gilly happy. My favorite part was when Gilly went to the bus station to buy a bus ticket to see her mom. I give the book 1 thumb up. Gilly was very clever and sneaky in the book. Other people might like it because Gilly is a lot like real people in the world. I would recommend this book to boys and girls. Probably 9th or 10th graders.
