The Sylvia Young Theatre School - How do I get in?

By Stephanie, 11, Wales

Hi,
Does anyone have any advice on how I can get into The Sylvia Young Theatre School. I want to try and get a scholarship but I don't know what I have to do to get one. I really want to train in the performing arts and my mum agrees with me that if I want to train then I should.

Please can someone tell me what I need to do.

Thanks Stephanie. (Feb 07)

Yeah, I'm a bandgeek

By Jordan, 11, Paris, TX, USA

Well the first reason I'm a bandgeek is that I play the bassoon! Which I personally think is cool because it is so big, but others just think you're weird. If you played the bassoon you would know how I feel. It's not that people make fun of you it's just they want to touch it and ask questions about it! That is like my "pet peeve". Now if you don't know what a bassoon is, it's about a 4ft something or other long instument, that you use a seat strap to hold up! The notes I know so far are: e, e flat, d, c, b flat, g, f, and a.
I can play all kinds of songs that sound really cool! well now you how to be a band geek!
got bassoon? (Jan 07)

I think that homework is a waste of your exercise and family time. When my mum went to school she didn't get any homework. I think that it is more important to be fit and healthy for life than be a computer dork. (June 2006)

Should Children do housework?

By Pratik, 9, Sheffield, UK

Our class have been discussing whether children should do house work or not.

My first reason for doing house work is because parents work for you so you should do work for them. My second reason for doing house work is because it gets you off the ps2. And you learn house work for when your older and my third reason for doing house work is because you like your parents.

On the other hand some people said you shouldn't do house work for your parents. My first reason for not doing house work is some people might find it boring also they might not like it. My second reason for not doing house work is people have better things to do for example play on the ps2 or play football or cricket outside and my third reason for not doing house work is when you get older you will own a house and you will have to do house work so this is the only rest we will get from doing house work.

I have looked at both arguments and I have made my mind up. I think that children shouldn't do house work because adults got all the muscles and children's time will come.

The animal illegal trade

By Danny, 13, Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland

I think that the illegal animal trade is horrible, I mean poachers go out to the wild and take baby gorillas from their mothers. They don't take them nicely, they will shoot the mother and probably kill all of the group. They will take the baby back to their town and sell it. The orphan will be kept as a pet and will never be released back into the wild where they should live. If can help please try and stop these animals from becoming extinct. (June 2006)

Animal Testing

By Lana, 13, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Hey, I am doing an argument on animal testing and I think it is really bad and cruel to test cosmetics on animals. I mean "why for the sake of beauty?"
Imagine living locked inside a closet without control over any aspect of your life. You can't choose when and what you eat, how you will spend your time, whether or not you will have a partner and children, and if you do, who that partner will be. You can't even decide when the lights go on and off. Think about spending your entire life like this, even though you have committed no crime.
This is life in a laboratory for animals. It is deprivation, isolation, and misery.

Homework

By Matt, 16, Carlton, Nottingham, UK

Hi everyone. Well, homework: it can be very exciting but most of the time it's very boring. Why do the teachers give it us when the whole point of after school is free time not spending an hour doing your homework? I have always thought this. Do your schools give detentions? Well our school does. Another form of punishment we shouldn't be given. The teachers give you a detention for the simplest things and they have to give them after school. Another way to get rid of your free time. I bet all you school children are thinking the same way as me. Please post your ideas about how we could change this free time problem. Thanks, Matt. Fox Hunting

By Jaime, 12, Wellington, New Zealand

I am not sure what to think of fox hunting. Cruelty sums up most of it but to be honest, foxes aren't the cutest, nicest or cleanest creatures! The new laws are fair but hunting is good in some ways but bad in others. (July 2005)

Animal testing

By Jabber, 11, Stratford, UK

I'm doing a debate about animal testing in my english class and I am the first proposer so I have to deliver the first speech and I've been looking on the internet to find out reason against animal testing and I've realised how muuch pain these animals get put through for a bottle of perfume for example and I think its really harsh on the animals this needs to stop. The world
The world these days is unbearable,
The schools are unworthy,
The kids are terrible,
The T.V. is sick,
The food is horrible.
But yet we still live here,
Trying to survive.
Different religions, Fighting,
Why can't we just get along??????????

What We Have To Do

By Sian, 11, Croydon, Surrey, England

I am here, writing this, absoloutely furious. Go on to www.bigcatsrescue.org and you will see why!
I am an animal lover. I love animals, but I escpicially love wild cats. I can't say big cats, because lynxes arn't big.
Like most people (I hope) I hate poaching, I hate fur clothes, and I hate the chinese medicine that uses tiger parts. (It's actually stupid. The tiger parts don't do anything, but the makers of the medicine add small amounts of poison to it to cause a reaction). I am trying very hard to publish an animal magazine in my school. I am going to volunteer at the local animal shelter this weekend.
But some stupid people keep big cats (and I mean tigers and cheetahs here,) as pets! Admittidly, they buy them as cubs. But they still shouldn't do it! Personally, if I was offerered a baby tiger, I would be really, really tempted. I would. I'm not deneying that. But I would say "NO!" and report them to the police, and when they confiscated all the baby cats, I would take them to London Zoo. And then, when the tiger grows up, they think "Uh oh, its BIG now," and they either;
A-sell it to a furrier.
B-leave it to fend for itself in a forest or something.
THink about it; you are leaving an adult tiger, that weighs 700 pounds, and is 18 times stronger tan a human being, a tiger that IS USED to humans, out on its own!? It will head straight for humans. It expects humans to give it food. Often, tigers walk straight through a town or village. A child could come face to face with a hungry adult tiger. If the child ran, which it probably would, the tiger chases it. It is the tigers instict. It is not the tigers fault.
SO what I am trying to say is;
DO YOUR PART AND HELP THE ANIMALS!!!!!!!

Pokemon

By Haz, 6, Nottingham, UK

Good day. I thought your site was quite good, but lacks authenticity. It needs something to improve its image on the 'younger' world. It needs more Pokémon to improve ratings and boost the site's reputation. I hope you follow through with my suggestion. (July 2005)

British School Uniform

By James, 11, Guildford, UK

As a young British citizen, I would like to put forward how much I am against uniform.

Firstly, for all you Americans and kids who don't wear school uniform, British school uniform is usually made up of dull, stuffy clothing. You must wear plain socks and ties. Although the clothing varies slightly depending on the gender, it is really very similar.

Anyone who goes to school knows how school governments/headteachers make up excuses to get things their own way. Below I have a list that shows the excuses then counters them.

1. It can be hard for people who have just arrived to the country to afford new clothing---School uniform can cost much more; up to £100 a year ($186/145 Euros)! It would be cheaper to not have to buy more clothes.

2. Children may be bullied if they don't have the latest fashion trend---Does anyone have that problem at weekends? Don't we face that problem anyway.

3. Uniform can be offensive---The simple solution is to have some small restrictions.

4. You can get lost on a field trip and it is much easier to see you---All they need to do is put their minds to it; what about a hat or sticker.

Anyway, haven't the Americans, Swedish, French... already faced these problems? If you are American or don't have to wear uniform at school please reply.

Us British kids need our childhood and freedom back...

Fox hunting

By Gemma, 14, Keighley, UK

Fox hunting shouldn't be banned because if you live on farms with livestock e.g hens, lambs and geese, the foxes just stroll up the yard and kill your animals just for fun. They have food in the countryside to eat or to play with. If you vote against fox hunting, you are so wrong. Keep the hunt or other animals are killed instead e.g hounds, beagles, horses, hens, lambs, rabbits, geese, bantems, birds, deer etc. do you want to see these animals killed? I don't. You choose. Keep the hunt! (February 2005)
