Gwen Grant

    Gwen Grant was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire and still lives very near there. She has twin sons and five grandchildren aged 3-14.

    She left school at 15 and went to work in a tobacconist's shop, and from there to a factory making wooden items. She was in the brush handle section. Then she went to Night School to do shorthand typing and bookkeeping. She worked in a solicitor's office, and then took an Open University Degree in Humanities, specialising in philosophy.

    Her first publications were in the 1970s and she has written many books, poems, short stories for radio, magazines and anthologies. Her work has been translated into many languages, including Japanese, German and Scandinavian languages.

    Shortlisted: Carnegie Award.
    Runner-up: Guardian Children's Fiction award.
