Play date

By Savannah, 8, Southport, UK

On Wednesday 5th of July 2006 I felt sad. Everyone in my class got invited to my friend's suprise party except me.
I had nobody to play with.

Then something amazing happened. A year 4 boy from my
school came and knocked on my front door. I answered the door and he said "would you like to come and play at my house for two hours?" he said smiling slightly. I was overjoyed and had a great time. (July 2006)

The trip to Paris

By Tarun, 9, London, UK

One day I was going to Paris in a train called Eurostar.
The station where the trains were put was Waterloo.
When I walked past the train I thought it was rather long. When I got in the train I was comfortable. I heard that Eurostar goes underground for 20 min. The underground tunnel was 40 miles, which was very long. The station that we got off was Gare de Nord. The station was quiet huge.
We took a hotel in IBIS Anchor hotels. The first visit that we had made was to the Eiffel Tower. The tower was rather high. We went up to the top floor. I was really afraid of heights. On the next day I went to Disney Land. It was really fun. There were only rides there. I loved that day.
The next day I went to a church. There were stunning paintings there. After that we went to Gare de Nord
again and travelled to London.

By Sophie, 9, Capel St Mary, Ipswich, UK

On the 11th of August 2004, we went to Turkey but we didn't get there that quick. First we had to get in our car and travel all the way to the airport and there we had to wait until our aeroplane had arrived in the airport then they would Announce that the plane had arrived. Then we had to go to a check out desk and we would show our passport also, and they had to check our luggage once everything had been checked and was o.k . Then we had to get on the aeroplane and we flew to Turkey.

The strong accident (personal narrative)

By Johara, 12, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Have you ever had a car accident? Come and listen to my story. One morning at summer I woke up and was going to my grandmothers house with my family. We rode the car. When we were on our way a strong rainstorm came and the way was all water. Suddenly a car crossed the stoplight. The car bumped us.

Afterwards another car came to take us to the hospital. When we were in the hospital the doctor said that my leg is broken. Most of my cousins came to visited me and brought for me gifts. I wish nothing like this will happen to you. (January 2005)

Rascal is a rascal

By Kristy, 8, Jarrow, UK

(real life) When I went to Disney World Florida I swam with dolphins. My one was called Rascal and come to think of it he was a rascal. I'll tell you how. Rascal was gettng tickled and he started splashing water all over because it was tickling (exactly). Also when he was under the water he gave us all a fright when he jumed up in front of us. Anyway I can't remember that much because it was in May 2004. Wait and see if I write again next week. (December 2004)

It was scary in school one day

By Jack, 8, London, UK

It was hard one morning we had a different teacher. Our teacher was off she had a abscess from her tooth. Our teacher was nice but we all wanted our real teacher back. The whole class was scared. We did not like our other teacher. We suffered for two weeks. But soon our teacher was back but then she left after Christmas. Because she had fostered a nine year old daughter. It was between having the girl and teaching 27 children. (November 2004)

The Day I Caught A Catfiish

By Katie, 10, USA

When I was about five, Dad took me fishing. We drove about one hour to get to the pond, then Dad and I unloaded the cooler and the tackle box and our rods.
After Dad baited my hook and put my favorite bobber (green and yellow) on, he cast out for me and let me hold the rod.
"Now if that bobber goes under, Katie, you call for me."
"Okay, Dad."
I got bored of standing, but then Dad looked around.
"Katie! Pull on that rod!!!!!!!!"
I did, but the fish was heavy, so I yelled, "Help!"
He helped me get that fish out of the water and back in.
The End

Goal!!!

By Elise, nine, Nogales, Arizona, USA

It's Saturday at about 7:30 in the morning. My name is Elise and I'm nine years old. I just woke up and I am going to my soccer game in Rio Rico. My mom was going to pick up my friend Maria. I had barely told her that the game was in Rio Rico. When we picked up Maria it would add 15 minutes to our drive. We had to go quick.
After we picked up Maria, we drove to Robert Damon Park and Maria and I jumped out of the car and ran to the fields. Most of the team was already there and we started practicing. My mom had to go somewhere, so she told the coach she was leaving and took off. The game started!
It was the end of the first quarter and my team (the Cheetahs) were winning 3 to 0. It was the second quarter and I was going in. It was going to be a goal kick so I stood right in front of the goalie because she could not kick very hard. When she finally kicked, it bounced off me and I kicked it with my left. It was a GOAL! Only 30 seconds of the quarter past, and I had made a goal. Right after the goal my dad showed up. He missed the goal, but I was still very happy he was there to watch.
When the second quarter ended, the Cheetahs were still winning 5 to 0. During the third quarter I had to sit out and Maria scored a goal during that quarter. When the quarter finally ended, we were winning 6 to 0. The fourth quarter began and I was in the game. The other team (Pinkies United) scored 2 goals. But the Cheetahs still had the lead. During the last 30 seconds of the game, my friend Paulina scored a goal. The final score was Cheetahs 7 and Pinkies United 2. At the end of the game, all the girls were excited and happy that we had won because we had lost the game before.

Have You Ever Fainted?

By Jessica, 11, Newcastle, UK

Have you ever fainted?
The dew was like teardrops on the greenkissed grass. The rain from the night before was drying up from the rise of the sun that morning. Later it happened.
The garden was quiet, just me and my grandma. I was about 19 months old just toddling around the colourful garden, with the birds cheeping in the distance and nesting in the trees.
Then I woke in the doctors …
What happened you ask? I was playing in the garden when I stumbled on a small step - my grandma came to my aid quickly and rang my dad who came promptly and rushed me to the doctors. I had fainted - my grandma told me she was very shocked. I woke a little dazed but was soon fine. Since I have fainted another 3 times so I have been to the hostpital to be checked for epilepsy. The Day I Felt Pain.

By Jade, 11, Newcastle, UK

Have you ever felt pain?
Well one day I woke up on a sunny day where the sun shined bright and the wind was still.
My brother was allready up ready to go to school. My Dad had already gone to work. When we dropped him off we decided that we would go to Tesco's. We were just about to leave when something terrible happened to me, Jade.
My Mam had just went out of the door and didn't know that I was behind and…
She shut the door and trapped my finger in it.
I absolutely screamed. My Mam quickly took me to the car, strapped me in and set of to the hospital. When we got to the hospital my Mam phoned my Dad and he came. My Mam was crying her eyes out.
She found out that my nail bed had came out and it would have to be replanted. If it wasn't I would have no nail.
It was actually replanted but I still have a scar from where the stitches were.
To this day - when I am 11 (I was 2 at the time) - I still thank the doctor ever so much.
THANKS!!!!!

The Best Vacation Ever

By Sandy, 12, Ames, Iowa, USA

BUMPITY BUMP! CRASH! I groaned as I saw (and definitely heard) my little brother slide a suitcase down the stairs. “That better not have been my suitcase,” I muttered under my breath.
My mom poked her head out of her room. “What was that sound?” she asked.
“Alex just slid a suitcase down the stairs,” I responded, glaring at my brother with my hands on my hips. Satisfied by my answer, my mom’s head disappeared back into her room.
“Tattletale,” my brother accused, sticking his tongue out at me. I stuck my tongue back at him, which resulted in his high-pitched scream for Mom. Gee, I thought to myself. This day isn’t starting out very well. It was the first day of our 3-week trip to Northern California, and my brother and I had already got into a fight before we even got to the airport. This is definitely a bad omen, I concluded.
I was wrong, though. My family’s vacation was great! We started out by going to Paramount’s Great America, Northern California’s most thrilling theme park, located in San Jose. It sure earned its title, because even looking at some of the speeding roller coasters made me dizzy.
San Francisco, the location of the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, was my family’s next destination. Naturally, my family went on a boat tour to see the bridge. It was a magnificent sight to behold, but just a little better than the yummy food in San Francisco. After my family saw the Golden Gate Bridge, we went to a seafood restaurant. I ate a bowl of clam chowder, and half of a big freshly caught and boiled crab. The food was absolutely scrumptious. My family also went to several Chinese restaurants. I was absolutely delighted when I found out that they all served sesame balls, my favorite Chinese desert. Sesame balls are fried sweet rice balls filled with red bean sauce and covered with sesame. I was sad when I had to leave San Francisco and the delicious food there, but my family had other places to go!
The next stop on my family’s vacation was Monterey Bay. We visited an aquarium there, which was really fun. There were a lot of tourists at the aquarium, which I had expected, since my dad told me that it was the most popular aquarium in the U.S. in terms of visitors. I especially enjoyed the touch pool area there, in which I was allowed to touch everything from sea stars to bat rays. The next day, my family took a trip to Asilomar Beach, which was awesome because I live in Iowa, so I don’t get to go to beaches a lot. The day ended all too soon. I was sad to leave because I knew it was going to be a long time before I was able to go to another beach.
Imagine my surprise when a few days later, my family went to visit Santa Cruz and ran into the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, a theme park located on a beach. We rode the rides, played on the beach, and then played some theme park games. My brother won a stuffed penguin with an adorable little outfit and I won a cute stuffed turtle. All in all, the day was terrific!
Six Flags Marine World was the next theme park my family went to. It had awesome shows, and my family went to almost every one of them. My absolute favorite show was the dolphin show, though, because dolphins are my favorite type of animal. The dolphins amazed not only me but also the entire audience as they did flips and leaps into the air.
The last place my family visited in California, the Winchester Mystery House, was undoubtedly the most interesting. With staircases that lead to nowhere, doors in walls, and windows built on floors, it could confuse a thief almost as well as the mazes located in Egyptian pyramids. The Winchester Mystery House is actually not a house but a mansion. It is about 24,000 square feet and 13 times the size of today’s average American home. In 1884, Sarah Winchester, a widow who inherited 20 million dollars from her husband, started building this mansion. Her husband was the son of the Winchester Rifle inventor and manufacturer, which explains why they were so rich. You might be wondering why Sarah Winchester decided to build the mansion. Well, it is believed that when her husband and baby daughter died, Mrs. Winchester was convinced by a medium (or a psychic) that continuous building would pacify the evil spirits of the people killed by the Winchester Rifle. That’s when she started having carpenters building onto her house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. She actually believed that she could achieve eternal life by doing that! However, at age 82 she died, leaving behind a mansion filled with mystery and a popular tourist attraction.
I’ll never forget the trip my family took to California. It was the best trip I’ve ever been on, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to share it with you. (Summer 2004)

Daz Cat

By Molly, 8, South Lanarkshire, Scotland

Once I was sitting at my house bored when my
mum told me to go to my room.
So I went to my room and read a book.
5 minutes later my brother comes dashing through saying
“THERE’S A KITTEN IN THE WASHING MACHINE!!!,”
Knowing my brother I thought he was joking.
I went through to the living room and saw it.
This poor wee kitten sitting on my dad's lap.
I rushed over to it.
One more minute and it would have been dead.
The next day he was better but still not back to his old self. Mum told me what happened. She had double checked for kittens but there was no sign. Ten minutes later she heard the mewling and she told me of the deathly silence and she waited for the washing machine to stop. Our Maurice is what we called him, and our Maurice is a very lucky kitten.

The scariest night of my life

By Sophie, 9, Coventry, UK

On Sunday the 14th of March it was the scariest night in my life. I was in Doly Moch with the teachers when we had to do the nightline.
The night line did not sound too bad I thought you would be in a field holding a line in the pitch black with the teachers, but I was wrong.
When they took me and my team mate up to the nightline I realised it wasn't in a field, it was on a big cliff, and the teachers were not with you they were spread round the cliff. I was scared stiff I didn't want to do it and I started to cry, but my group leader Phill said I can do it so it gave me courage a little bit. When we were halfway there I cried again in fear because I could not do it any more.
Mr Jones told me I was on the way down and he would be watching me all the way so I carried on.
This boy called Joshua looked after me so I was fine. At the bottom Miss Mack was there waiting for us and said "we were the best group so far because how much teamwork we put into it"
So that was the story of my scariest night in my life.

A day with my Dad and a moment

By Paris, 9, USA

Today, my father had came over to see me. We was supposed to go to the theaters , but we did not go because his foot was hurting for the reason of that he was walking in the rain in big boots. My dad told me that his boots were as big as the Titanic. Therefore, he stayed at my house and we made our own theaters and also we played lots of excitng games. After that, my dad and I talked to each other about what we had did over the weekend. Also my dad told me this weekend coming up he's going to take me anywhere I want to go. When we talked to each other it was a special moment for me because he does not reaaly get to see me that much. And I feel so sad that it feels I should runaway and never come back home. Too, my relatives says that my dad is mentally crazy, but I said he is not and got mad. I am nine years old and I will still love my dad until the fat lady sings. I am just trying to tell everyone in the whole wide world how I feel and my moment. (Feb 2004)

Fox Hunting-A bloody liberty, not a civil liberty

By Vienna, 13, England

Fox hunting - A bloody liberty.

Traditional? How could ripping a animal up for fun be traditional? How could you sit on your horse, laughing, watching the hounds tear and disimboewl a fox?

These are a few comments I have heard.

"We would have to kill the hounds if they banned hunting."
Was the boy's reply.
Really? Considering the hunt kill hounds when they come to around 6 years old. Also, any puppies that are born deformed or (even more horrifically) are the wrong colour, they shoot, drown or club to death. So the hunt cry "crocodile tears" over the hounds. The hounds could turn to drag hunting instead.

"People who want to ban fox hunting are just townies who don't understand how the contryside works."
Over half the people who want to ban fox hunting are from the contryside.

"It's not cruel. We are keeping the numbers of foxes down."

You may have heard this lie a lot. I know I have. The fact is, surveys done when the foot and mouth chrisis was around, and hunts were not allowed, showed that hunters have no real impact on the fox population.

"Foxes eat farmers' chickens."
Well if the farmers aren’t clever enough to properly keep their chickens, the foxes deserve to have them.
Also, it is estimated that foxes save farmers 100 million pounds a year by eating rabbits and other rodents that eat crops and corn.

How can we truly call ourselves "humans" when we inflict cruelty for the fun of it? Why is it, that bear-baiting and cock-fighting were banned, but not this "sport"?

Next time you think this country is civilised, think again.
