Bonfire Night
By Sasha, 10, Scarborough, Yorkshire, UK
Bonfire night exists because of a man called Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes was a catholic who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries. He was asked by some other catholics to find a way to kill the King, James I, because he was a protestant and was arresting and killing catholics.
Guy Fawkes planted lots of barrels of gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament so that when the King visited on November 5th he could blow the building up.
He was caught in the cellar by the Kings soldiers. He was tortured and then hanged, drawn and quartered.
Every year people make an effigy of Guy Fawkes and burn him on top of the bonfire.
There is a saying that reminds people of what happened on November 5th, 1605;
"Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, Treason and plot.
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason,
Should ever be forgot."
